My name is Katie McKillen and I will be your penpal from Armenia for this year. I am in the United States Peace Corps and will be living in Armenia for two years. I will be learning the language, culture, and helping the people. I am from Chicago, IL and have traveled a long way to get here. My journey went from Chicago to Washington, DC to
Vienna, Austria, and finally to Yerevan, Armenia.Yerevan is the capital of Armenia and has the only international airport. The country is not much bigger than all of Connecticut combined! It is about the size of Maryland. In total, it has approximately 3 million people.
The language of Armenia is Armenian. It is the only country in the world that speaks its unique language. However, the children learn some English and Russian in school. The writing looks like this:
Բարև Ձեզ, ինչպես եք? (Hello, How are you?)
I am currently working at a school in Khndzoresk, Armenia where the children are diligently working to learn English so they can be penpals with you all. They are very excited to hear from you and learn about America. Most of the children have never traveled outside of their country, or even their town.I will be writing you every couple of weeks to tell you about the culture of Armenia and my journey. We can't wait to hear from you soon!
From,
Katie and Your New Armenian Friends

Hello New Friends!
Firstly, I would like to apologize for taking so long to blog. September is the first month of school where we live and things can get a little bit crazy in the beginning of the school year. When is your first month of school?
After reading your first blog we have a few things we want to tell you, and of course, we have some questions!
Room 21 wants to know if you can teach us some Armenian words. We also want to know how to write like you-your writing is so different! Our last question is about your flight Katie. How many hours of flying time did it take for you to get from Chicago all the way to Armenia? It looks like it is SO far!!!
Now, here are a few things that we wanted to teach you about America! :)
Room 21 wanted to tell you about our flag. It is red, white, and blue. It has red and white stripes and white stars on a blue background. We want to show you a picture, but Miss L. doesn't know how to post it on our blog! Katie, could you show our new friends a picture of the flag? The reason the flag has 13 stripes on it is because of the original 13 colonies that existed before there were states. And the 50 white stars are there because there are now 50 states in the US. What does your flag look like?
We will read your new post this week and write back much quicker this time!!!
Thanks!
